Our senior adult inpatient program is a short-term care option that can help those in need stabilize and prepare for the next phase of their healing journey. Senior adults typically spend 10-12 days in the inpatient setting, though the actual program duration may vary. We work closely with each patient to determine the length of stay that can help them make sustained progress toward their wellness goals.

Key features of the inpatient program for senior adults include:

  • A seamless admissions process: We recognize that prompt care is essential for individuals who are in crisis. At our facility, we offer a stress-free admissions process so that individuals can begin participating in programming as quickly as possible.
  • In-depth assessments: Each senior adult completes a thorough evaluation with a member of our staff. This helps us better understand the patient’s health history and specific needs so that we can determine certain elements of their care, including the appropriate therapeutic interventions.
  • A safe and structured environment: Our senior adult inpatient program offers a secure space where patients can receive the intensive support they need. Our attentive staff provides patients with continual monitoring to help ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Age-appropriate care: Senior adults can receive specialized care that addresses age-related concerns, including loneliness, loss, and grief. We focus on helping patients develop practical skills and coping strategies that can enhance their overall functioning.
  • A supportive community: We maintain a warm and welcoming setting where patients can feel supported by empathetic staff members and peers. They can participate in activities and therapy sessions that are designed to promote a sense of community and social connectedness.
  • Evidence-based practices: We utilize research-backed interventions, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), that have proved effective in treating behavioral health concerns.
  • A caring staff: Our compassionate team includes medical professionals, licensed social workers, counselors, activity therapists, behavioral health associates, and other highly trained staff. Together, we provide high-quality, integrated care with the utmost respect for those we serve.
  • Detailed discharge planning: We strive to set each person up for a successful transition back to their daily life after their time in our program ends. For this reason, we begin discharge planning at the start of programming and continually adjust each patient’s plan so that it reflects their progress and needs. Continuing care plans may include referrals to a lower level of care or other resources for ongoing support.

Therapies & Services Offered in Our Senior Adult Inpatient Program

At East Tennessee Behavioral Health, we are dedicated to helping senior adults improve their quality of life. We meet each individual where they are on their healing journey and provide holistic, focused care that addresses their mental, physical, social, and emotional needs.

Our goal with the senior adult inpatient program is to help patients return home safely or step down to a less restrictive level of care. To help our patients achieve optimal results, we provide them with only the therapies and services they can benefit from.

In our senior adult inpatient program, we offer a wide range of therapies and services, including:

  • Medical care: Our trained physicians, registered nurses (RNs), and nurse practitioners (NPs) provide basic care as needed for patients who have chronic stable medical conditions. Patients who can benefit from receiving medical care as part of their customized care plan may meet with our medical team daily.
  • Medication management services: Depending on a patient’s needs, medication management can be crucial for effective care. Those who require medication management services may meet with psychiatrists, RNs, and NPs daily. Our professionals work closely with patients to manage their medications, ensuring the right balance and effectiveness while minimizing side effects.
  • Detoxification services: For patients who have substance use disorders, we offer on-site, nonmedical detoxification services. Detox programming, which typically takes three to seven days to complete, is led by psychiatrists, NPs, RNs, social workers, and activity therapists. Throughout the process, our team offers 24/7 support to promote the comfort and safety of each patient.
  • Individual therapy: In one-on-one therapy sessions, we help patients address underlying concerns and provide a safe space for open discussions. Licensed social workers and counselors lead individual therapy sessions.
  • Family therapy: Our team believes that family involvement can be vital to a person’s healing process, so we provide sessions that can help patients and their family members improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen bonds. Social workers and counselors facilitate family therapy sessions.
  • Group therapy: Group therapy sessions provide a supportive environment where patients can share experiences and insights with others who may be facing similar challenges. Group sessions occur multiple times daily and are led by nurses, social workers, counselors, activity therapists, and behavioral health associates. During group sessions, patients can learn about a variety of topics, including healthy boundaries, goal setting, medication support, anger management, independent living, suicide prevention, and recovery and relapse.
  • CBT: CBT can help patients identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors. By utilizing this type of therapy, we aim to empower senior adults to develop healthier ways of thinking and coping.
  • DBT: DBT can help patients manage emotions and improve relationships. This type of therapy can be particularly effective for individuals who are experiencing intense emotional distress.
  • Recreation therapy: Engaging in recreational activities can foster holistic well-being. At our facility, we offer activities that promote physical health, mental stimulation, and social interaction to help senior adults improve their overall wellness.
  • Motivational enhancement therapy: This patient-centered therapy method can help people overcome ambivalence about making positive changes. It focuses on increasing motivation and setting achievable goals.
